So picture this: a tough, fearless German man—me—charging into the Utah desert on a mission to see Factory Butte, because mountains made of rock demand respect.
The gravel road was still muddy from the rain, but did I worry?
Of course not.
I drive on the Autobahn. I fear nothing.
Turns out, I should have feared mud.
Deep, sticky, soul-crushing American mud.
My car sank into that stuff like it was trying to dig its own grave.
Zero traction.
Zero movement.
Maximum humiliation.
So I did the only thing possible:
I grabbed a plastic cup and started digging, like some sort of discount archaeologist.
Surprisingly—brace yourself—this did not free the car.
Instead, the car just sank deeper, probably whispering, “Stop embarrassing yourself.”
Then I checked my phone:
No signal.
Of course.
The desert wanted me to suffer properly.
Two hours into my new life as a stranded desert caveman, a Land Rover approached.
A man and a woman inside.
I waved like a hero.
They looked at me like I was Bigfoot, panicked…
and sped off.
No “Hi,” no “Need help?”, not even a sad little thumbs-up.
Just pure terror and gas pedal.
At that moment I thought:
Wow. The legendary American hospitality. Beautiful.
So, at a casual 30°C (that’s 86°F, because the desert wants suffering in two units), I threw a power bank and some water into my backpack and started walking.
Four hours.
Through sand, rocks, snakes, cacti, and all my bad life choices.
Finally got one bar of signal.
Miracle.
Called the gas station in Hanksville.
Guy gives me a number—from Colorado.
Sure. Fantastic. Exactly what I need.
Maybe next he’ll give me the number of a tow truck in Alaska.
So I call the gas station again.
This time he says:
“I’ve got ONE more number. And after this… don’t call me again.”
Wow.
The American kindness just keeps hitting.
So I called the number.
One time.
Two times.
Three times.
Nothing.
Fourth call:
“This is Dave.”
And with that, the universe finally stopped bullying me.
Three hours later, Dave arrives.
Total legend.
Big beard energy.
Pulls my car out of the mud like he does this before breakfast.
Dave: absolute hero.
Give him a Star on the hall of fame of Hanksville!

We had an amazing experience! The couple that came out and helped were so sweet and helpful. We accidentally locked our keys out of our truck. They arrived quickly, and got the truck unlocked in no time! They were very informative about other questions we had. Will def go to them again if we have any other problems while staying here! thanks again!

I can’t say enough great things about JAY’S 24 HOUR Locksmith. Jay went above and beyond to help me out of a bad situation.
I was driving a UHual moving truck and had stopped in Wellington for gas when the key to the truck suddenly stopped working. Jay quickly figured out that it was due to the key no longer communicating with the anti-theft device in the truck.
He then made up a new set of keys and got me back on the road.
It was late in the day and there was a point in the process where he could have abandoned the job and left me to the mercy of UHual roadside assistance, but he didn’t do that. He went above and beyond to make sure I didn’t end up stranded, and I’m immensely grateful for that.
He was extremely knowledgeable and also very friendly. I’m really glad to have met him.
If you have any locksmith needs I wouldn’t hesitate to give Jay a call.

I called him when my daughter locked her keys in the car on Snow Campus. He was there with 15 minutes and had it opened quickly. Even offered her info where to get another key made. So impressed and grateful.
