  Hispanic woman at the counter was sarcastic and rude. I approached the counter, “ Hi, I’m here to pick-up an online order.” My voice is naturally soft and calm. Her tone was sarcastic and seemed to be intentional behavior as she requested me to repeat my name, then when I said my name she said, “Oh… you are so and so”, like she knew me. She seemed aggressive towards me as if I had did something to her by simply requesting for my online purchased items. There was another girl at the counter Black. She was quite and did not say anything. I am new to this area and never been to an Ace store aside from today. I remained calm but felt annoyed and saddened to be treated like I was lesser than. Maybe the aggression and sarcastic tone was not meant for me, and I walked into it. But it did not make me feel good. It felt antagonizing, and I’m tired of these experiences. Respectfully, I will spend my money at another location. Not the Takoma location.

  The service at this location is excellent! The staff is fantastic! My issue with "Takoma Ace Hardware" is that they are a corporate commercial business in a mom-and-pop neighborhood. They are intruding on other local mom-and-pop businesses by selling children's toys, stationery, and other things that one wouldn't expect to find at a "hardware" store. This, in turn, takes businesses away from the local stores in the neighborhood that would attract patrons for those items. It is my personal opinion that they stick to hardware and stray away from trying to become a super-center for all your needs under one roof. No one wants or needs a Walmart in a town that collectively offers its citizens much variety in stores, food, and entertainment.

What you've shared is one of the biggest misconceptions of our stores- please know, our stores are employee-owned and operated members of the Ace Hardware Co-op, and while Ace is a nationally recognized brand, each location is independently owned and operated. Not every Ace is employee owned like ours, but nationally each store is in fact locally owned by an independent retailer- we are not a chain or franchise. Our team of buyers take special care to avoid any superfluous overlap with other local businesses in our community. We research product availability and assortment in neighboring shops and do our best not to compete with other small businesses as we know the health of our business is only as good as the vibrancy and diversity of our surrounding economy.   Shop local... This full service hardware store takes one back to a time before "big box" hardware. I have found everything from replacement light bulbs and LEDS for my Maglight flashlights to plants and mulch...great store, great folks.
