Yesterday we lost our keys to our van and needed a locksmith. I called around looking for a locksmith who could come quickly. I called North Las Vegas Locksmith at 3:20pm. They said it would be about 30-45 min until someone could arrive. I thought this was reasonable. They informed me that the locksmith would call when he was on his way. He called at 3:45pm and said that he could not find my address. After several calls and me sending him my address by text he finally indicated that he could arrive in about 30 min. He did not arrive until 4:40pm (about 50 min later). I informed him that our van had an ignition key and a door key. He said that he could not match the van key because it was not the original from the dealer. I was a little wary of this but accepted his explanation. He said he needed to replace the ignition. I asked him the price of switching out the ignition and coding the door for a new key. He said between $400-500. I was not happy with this price but accepted that switching out the ignition might be more labor. He left to get a new ignition. I texted him about 30 min later (5:17pm) asking when he would return. He said he would be back in 20 min and the job would be a half hour. He did not arrive until 30 min later (5:49pm). He started to replace the ignition. Apparently part of replacing the ignition involves drilling out the old ignition. This took much longer than expected. He did not appear to know what he was doing. He finished replacing the ignition at 7:01pm. The ignition took over an hour by itself. He then proceeds to start decoding the door. He decodes the drivers door and tells me he cannot make a key for it because it is loose. He decodes the passenger door, makes a key and tries it out. It opens the trunk and the passenger door. It does not work for the driver door. He tells me he doesn't know why it doesn't work for the driver door. I tell him that he is the locksmith and should be able to figure it out. He says he cannot. I ask him to try to decode the driver door. He tries again and says he cannot due to looseness in the lock. I tell him that our previous door key worked just fine and didn't have any problems. He reiterates that there is nothing he can do. I ask if he can make a FOB. He said he cannot tonight. He then proceeded to tell me my final cost is $621 (including tax). I tell him that his estimate was between $400-500 not $600+. He says he didn't include the price of decoding the door ($69) in the original estimate. That was one of the reasons we called the locksmith. I was starting to get upset. It was 7:44pm at night. I had called the locksmith over 4 hours ago and expected resolution of the problem within an hour of his arrival. The process had taken significantly longer than expected, cost more than expected by more than $100, and had not produced the expected result (i.e. a door key that works on all doors). He did not provide any alternative to fixing my driver door key. As he was packing up to leave I asked him if he had a vacuum to clean up all the metal shavings from his drilling. He said he did not. He left a pile of metal shavings all over my seat and the ground. I found this extremely unprofessional. I am deeply dissatisfied with the service I received.

Rip off artists do not use. They will come out and up the charge extremely because they know you need your keys out of the car.
