With the local hardware store only a fond memory, the tedious task of getting your keys duplicated just became a lot more complicated. But in the American tradition, a company called KeyMe has come up with a refrigerator-sized machine that needs no human operator except yourself. There are a number of steps involved but they are simple ones, and the machine will guide you through the process of inserting your originals and copying them, one key at a time. Certain key types, like USPS mailbox keys, cannot have blanks stored in the KeyMe machine but they've figured out a solution to that, too. Give the machine your USPS key as you would the others. The machine will read its details and transmit them securely to KeyMe's central office, where however many copies you wanted will be mailed to you within a week. Your credit card is required to get the machine chugging away on your duplicates, and each one takes around 8 minutes to produce. But a little wait is better than having to drive across town to a locksmith shop and have them duplicated by hand. Use KeyMe's website to find out where they've installed one of their machines close to you. I live in the Bay Area and they are EVERYWHERE. They got the job done for me at around $10 a key, and I recommend them.

Really easy experience; since I already made a copy of my key using the service in the past, I just needed my email and finger print. Boom. Unlike keys we've made in the past, they're solid and work perfect, all five or so keys we've had made. Hardware store keys we've bought in the past 20 years or so either didn't always open the door, or they were too soft and would bend. I'm guessing hardware stores have improved in that way, but why go all the way out there when you can just use this kiosk?
